Population Description

The population of the state of Idaho in 1996 was estimated to be 1,189,251, made up of 594,604 males and 594,647 females. Population estimates were obtained from the U.S. Bureau of the Census.7 Idaho is comprised of 44 counties grouped into seven health districts. The composition of the health districts as well as their population estimates by gender as used in this report are shown below:

Descriptive Summary by Race and Gender

The data presented in this report cover those cases diagnosed in among Idaho residents between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1996. In this time frame , there were 4,780 cases of cancer diagnosed in Idaho, of which 4,629 were non-Hispanic Caucasian, 85 Hispanic Causasian, 7 Native American, and 7 African American. Other races such as Chinese, Japanese, etc., totaled 52 people. The 4,780 cases consisted of 2,477 males and 2,303 females.
