Population Description

The population of the state of Idaho in 1996 was estimated to be 1,189,251, made up of 594,604 males and 594,647 females. Population estimates were obtained from the U.S. Bureau of the Census.7 Idaho is comprised of 44 counties grouped into seven health districts. The composition of the health districts as well as their population estimates by gender as used in this report are shown below:

Descriptive Summary by Race and Gender

The data presented in this report cover those cases diagnosed among Idaho residents between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 1997. In this time frame , there were 5,116 cases of cancer diagnosed among Idaho residents, 2,552 among males, and 2,564 among females. By race and ethnicity, there were 4,993 cases among non-Hispanic Whites, 59 among Hispanic Whites, 6 cases among Blacks, 16 cases among Native Americans, 26 cases among Asians/Pacific Islanders, and 3 cases among other races. Race or ethnicity were unknown for 13 cases.
