Risk and Associated Factors
Age Multiple myeloma is an age-dependent cancer. It increases with age and rarely occurs before age 40.
Gender Rates for males and females are usually similar.
Race African Americans have a higher incidence rate, sometimes twice the rate for Caucasians.
Genetics Genetic factors play an important role in its development but how so is not completely understood. Familial factors and chronic antigenic stimulation have also been implicated.
Other Multiple myeloma has been associated with lymphomas such as Burkitt's, and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Studies have suggested several possible viral etiologies. Specific environmental exposures such as herbicides and radiation may also play an important role in the incidence of multiple myeloma.

There were no cases of plasma cell tumors among persons less than 40 years of age. The age-specific incidence rates increased rapidly for both males and females after age group 65-69. The incidence rates for males were more than twice as high as for females after age group 75-79. No health districts had significantly more cases than expected based upon rates for the remainder of Idaho.
